Journalism, a dangerous trade in The Gambia

The Dangerous Business of Journalism in The Gambia” is a documentary the Ghana-based Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) produced within the framework of its campaign for free speech and freedom of expression in The Gambia, which has been deteriorating, especially since current present President Yahya Jammeh came to power through a coup in 1994.



According to the release MFWA issued,the documentary highlights the deteriorating conditions of free expression and acts of impunity, and calls for support to improve the situation.

Dozens of journalised have fled the  country or on self-exile due to harassments, arrests, unjustified detentions, torture, etc. Those on the ground live in a climate of fear and self-censorship.
 
Between 2011 and 2012 alone, the MFWA recorded more than 30 incidents of such brutal violations.
“Despite persistent global condemnation, the Gambian government led by its dictator, President Yahya Jammeh, continues to brutally stifle freedom of expression and press freedom rights with gross impunity,” MFWA added.
